Each April is budget season for Metro Nashville Public Schools, and the Nashville School Board is working hard to finalize the school system’s proposed budget for the 2017-18 school year. The current draft budget calls for a 7.1% increase to fund increases in salaries and benefits, hire additional teachers to support English Learners, expand advanced academics, and strengthen early grades literacy programs. Later this spring, the nine-member school board will finalize development of a new strategic plan, which we’ll use to establish new tools to hold Dr. Shawn Joseph, the director of schools, accountable for progress. At Croft Middle School, we’re developing a new technology initiative that will strengthen the school’s partnership with the Nashville Zoo. I’ll report back with the details of this exciting new initiative as it unfolds.
